Tongue weight: the 10–15% rule and how to actually measure it
Tongue weight is the single most-fiddled-with number in towing. Check yours with the tongue weight calculator, then use this to move it into the band.
Why 10–15%
The trailer pivots on its axles. Tongue weight is the counterweight that keeps the coupler pressing down and the whole train stable behind the tow vehicle. Below about 10%, the trailer's own momentum can lift the hitch and start a yaw oscillation — sway — which builds on itself and, above roughly 55 mph, can exceed what steering input can correct. Above 15%, the rear axle carries more than its rated share, the front axle unloads, and both steering and braking degrade. Somewhere in the middle — 12% is the classic target — the rig tracks straight and every axle stays inside its rating.

The bathroom-scale lever method
A bathroom scale maxes out around 300–400 lb, but a 7,000 lb camper needs ~850 lb on the tongue. The lever trick: rest the coupler on a beam supported at one end, place the scale under the beam closer to the fulcrum. With the coupler 24 inches from the fulcrum and the scale 12 inches from it, the scale reads one third of the true tongue weight — multiply by 3. Keep the beam horizontal, jack stands under the far end, coupler at towing height.
Moving the number
- Too light (under 10%): shift cargo forward — toward the trailer's front wall or ahead of its axles. Water tanks, batteries, and toolboxes are your biggest movable masses.
- Too heavy (over 15%): shift cargo behind the axles — but never past the rear bumper, where leverage multiplies weight swings.
- Rewire the defaults: on most travel trailers, moving the batteries to the tongue adds 100–150 lb of tongue weight; moving them to the trailer rear removes the same.
