Best beginner welder — pick the metal first

Everyone asks "which machine should I buy?" The better question is "what thickness will I weld?" — the machine follows from that.

Step 1: your metal, not your budget

Write down the three heaviest things you'll actually weld. Trailer tongue? That's 3/16"–1/4". Exhaust patch? Thin pipe, 1/8" or less. Auto body? 20 ga sheet. This list decides everything — a machine sized for sheet metal is money wasted on trailer work and vice versa. Run each thickness through the thickness calculator to see the amps and rod it demands.

Step 3: three traps

Duty cycle marketing. A "140 amp" machine that's only rated 20% duty at 140 A gives you 2 minutes of welding per 10. Compute the real number with the duty cycle calculator at the amperage your metal needs.

Gas commitment. 75/25 MIG is far nicer than flux-core indoors, but the bottle, regulator, and refill are a real line item. Dual-process machines let you start flux-core and add gas when you're committed.

Thin-metal fantasies. Every beginner wants to weld body panels; almost no beginner's first machine should be a $2k TIG rig. Learn on 1/8" steel with MIG or stick — TIG skills transfer in later, not first.

The one-line answer

If you weld anything structural: 140 A dual-process minimum, 200 A if the budget breathes. If you only ever touch thin steel and brackets: a 90–140 A MIG covers it.
